Project management for reinforcement of electric bus charging infrastructure

During 2024 and 2025, Rytec AS held project management responsibility for Unibuss’s reinforcement project for electric bus charging infrastructure.

The project was initiated as a direct response to the challenging winter of 2023/2024, with a clear goal: to increase the capacity and resilience of the charging systems while minimizing disruption to daily operations.

The scope included installation of new rectifiers, satellite units, and associated cabling, as well as extensive groundwork such as new trenches and cable routes. Existing substations were rebuilt, new distribution panels were installed, and the entire area was resurfaced. A brand-new substation was also established. The project was carried out while the facilities remained in daily operation, placing high demands on planning and coordination.

“I’m very pleased to have been part of this project from start to finish and proud of the result. It has been incredibly rewarding to serve as project manager and later take on the role as technical lead Infrastructure for such a critical part of public infrastructure. It feels good knowing that we’ve helped strengthen Unibuss’s capabilities while also contributing to a better public transport offering in Oslo,” says Audun Lien.

During the course of the project, Rytec colleague Markus Heggheim was also brought for project management and to carry out Site Acceptance Testing (SAT) of the chargers, as well as the Ruter test, a functional test designed to verify dynamic power allocation and system stability.

“It’s been educational, exciting, and meaningful to contribute to strengthening Oslo’s public transport system through this project. I’ve also gained valuable insight into the e-mobility field,” says Markus Heggheim.

In total, Unibuss has increased its charging capacity by a full 10.8 megawatts, significantly improving operational reliability.

This project is one of several Rytec has supported for Unibuss in recent years, including the establishment of charging facilities, procurement of electric buses, and advisory services in connection with public tenders.
