Project management for Unibuss AS – reinforcement of charging infrastructure for electric buses
In 2024 and 2025, Rytec AS held project management responsibility for Unibuss’ reinforcement project of charging infrastructure for electric buses.
The project was initiated as a direct consequence of the challenging winter of 2023/2024, with a clear objective: to increase the capacity and robustness of the charging facilities, while minimizing disruption to daily operations.
The scope included installation of new rectifiers, satellites, and associated cabling, as well as extensive groundwork with new trenches and conduits. Existing substations were rebuilt, new distribution boards installed, and the entire area re-established with asphalt surfacing. A new substation was also constructed. The project was carried out while the facilities remained in daily use, which placed high demands on planning and collaboration.
“I am very pleased to have been part of this project from start to finish, and proud of the result. It has been incredibly rewarding to serve as project manager, and later to take on the role of Head of Discipline for such a critical piece of infrastructure. It feels good to know that we have helped provide Unibuss with better conditions while strengthening public transport in Oslo,” says Audun Lien.
During the project, Rytec colleague Markus Heggheim was also engaged as project manager and responsible for conducting Site Acceptance Testing (SAT) of chargers and the Ruter test – a functional test verifying dynamic power allocation in the chargers.
“It has been educational, exciting, and meaningful to contribute to strengthening Oslo’s public transport through this project. I have gained deeper insight into e-mobility,” says Markus Heggheim.
In total, Unibuss has increased its charging capacity by 10.8 megawatts, providing significantly improved operational reliability going forward.
This project is part of a series of assignments where Rytec has assisted Unibuss, including the establishment of charging facilities, procurement of electric buses, and advisory services related to public tenders.
